Musical Monday – Scrooge

Another week closer to the end of the year,2 weeks before I am off on my trip and I am slowly starting to get excited now. I did something Christmassy this weekend, I went to watch Scrooge at the Baxter Theatre.

Most people across the world know the great story written by Charles Dickens the Christmas Carol. Scrooge, a grumpy old man, who hated Christmas and was terribly cruel to all who had a merry cheer.

On Saturday thanks to my friend I got a ticket to see the latest production of Scrooge at the Baxter Theatre. Not knowing what to expect I was pleasantly surprised. The great story that Charles Dickens wrote was translated into a South African, rather quite Capetonian, version but still keeping true to the wonderful story.

Scrooge played by funny man Mark lottering was amazing he truly did a great job was still his funny self but played the character well. The rest of the cast was equally as great from the likes of Shaleen Surtie-Richards,Andrew Buckland, Christo Davids, Nur Abrahams and  Poseletso Segosinjoe ,who lead the Scrooge Children’s Choir of over 100 learners, from three different Cape Town communities.

It was such a beautiful story and wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The Director Lara Foot opened the show by dedicating it to Madiba. It’s the most amazing play to dedicate to him as it is so diverse and sure he would be so proud to see this story depicted the way they did. Fusing together every race and religion as much as possible. At the end we sang the national anthem and felt very patriotic and even little teary.

I will truly recommend that you go watch this show if you have a spare day in you busy festive calendar it will be a good laugh and something to do with the entire family.
