The Worlds Grandfather

The worlds Grandfather is critically sick and while the world watches in anticipation to find out if he will make it or not saddens me.

This man has done so many things for South Africa, and inspired the world. A true Icon, a legend a fighter and survivor. No other person on this earth will ever be able to do what this one man, struggled and gave his life too. A course he was passionate about determined to turn around. A man that spent 27 years locked up in jail and then came out and turned his situation around in South Africa’s darkest time. I was very young in the Apartheid era and have no recollection of this time. Just scary stories my family would tell me.

My mother married a white man in 1995 I was 8 years old at the time. South Africa had only been set free from its nightmare for one year. I remember the looks we would get walking in the streets such a sighting seeing a coloured women and white man was against the law for so many years. The mold that the previous government enforced was gone. No man was better than the next because of skin colour. This would not have been possible if Nelson Mandela voice was not heard. The birth of Courteney was gift born to our family from the abolishment of apartheid and we have Nelson Mandela to thank for the life we live today.

Today I sit here voicing my opinion because one man Nelson Mandela fought for my freedom and yours. His global influence is remarkable and his fight and long walk to freedom will live on forever. This man’s courage passion determination and soul will always be my inspiration to do my best even in the worst of times.

Times are tough but I can’t sit here and say I would be able to survive what Nelson Mandela did. He started South Africa’s rebirth, gave it a fresh start. Yes looking back we have come far from the dark Apartheid years. Many will argue that right now the situation is reversed and we complain for days and feel we never get heard . I believe we should be the change we want to see in the world. This man could have given up after being locked up for 27 years but he did not.

We sit in our comfort zones and complain and wish for someone else to pick up the pieces. I don’t think Madiba fought for our freedom for us to give up now. As we sit sad as the somberness swoops over the nation and the world anticipating the outcome of his condition. I pray to the Lord above that he rests in peace free from pain and that us as South Africans never forget what this man has done and we continue to live out the change he fought for.
