You Strike a Woman, You Strike a Rock!

I am a women I have a mother. a grandmother, a sister and the best girlfriends….My life is made up of strong independent women. I have great role models in my life and would not be anywhere near the women I am and strive to be if it was not for the women, God strategically places in my life.

The 9th of August marks National Womens Day in South Africa. (men don’t complain now we appreciate you guys too and just for that we made it a public holiday lol)

Jokes aside like most Public Holidays we often enjoy the day off but forget why we celebrate the actual day.

On 9 August 1956, 20,000 women staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the proposed amendments to the Urbanwomens-march Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950. They left bundles of petitions containing more than 100 000 signatures at prime minister J.G. Strijdom’s office doors. Outside they stood silently for 30 minutes, many with their children on their backs. The women sang a protest song that was composed in honour of the occasion: Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo!(Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock.). In the 54 years since, the phrase (or its latest incarnation: “you strike a woman, you strike a rock”) has come to represent women’s courage and strength in South Africa.

I want to be a strong women, making differences in the places God places me. I may not ever have to march to the Union Buildings like those 20 000 women did all those years ago but my march in my life will ultimately mean something to the people i meet. If I can inspire and motivate all the women in my path it will mean a job well done to me. So today we celebrate what those women did and what women across South Africa are doing in leadership roles as mothers, wives, grandmothers sisters and friends in society or in your homes. Today I say Thank You for inspiring me and motivating me to never stop my march.

Happy Womens Day!
